William Golding received the 1983 Nobel Prize in Literature for his novels which, with the perspicuity of realistic narrative art and the diversity and universality of myth, illuminate the human condition in the world of today. The contribution became an important reference point for later work in the field. This achievement represents one of the major advances recognized in literature at the time.
