Naguib Mahfouz received the 1988 Nobel Prize in Literature for who, through works rich in nuance - now clear-sightedly realistic, now evocatively ambiguous - has formed an arabian narrative art that applies to all mankind. The Nobel committee highlighted this contribution for its lasting importance to the field. This achievement represents one of the major advances recognized in literature at the time.
