Hiroshi Amano received the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics for the invention of efficient blue light-emitting diodes which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources. This work opened new questions and influenced later research and practice. This achievement represents one of the major advances recognized in physics at the time.
