Discovery of the Atomic Nucleus
Rutherford discovered that atoms have a tiny, dense nucleus at their center, overturning the idea that atoms were solid spheres. His gold foil experiment showed atoms are mostly empty space with a concentrated positive charge. This nuclear model of the atom enabled our understanding of radioactivity, nuclear energy, and led directly to splitting the atom.
