Impact Crater Recognition

Shoemaker proved that meteor impacts, not volcanoes, created most craters on Earth and the Moon. His work established that asteroid and comet collisions shaped planetary surfaces throughout solar system history. He co-discovered Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, which spectacularly collided with Jupiter. His research founded planetary geology and highlighted the real threat of asteroid impacts.
